What's the best way to liquidate a large collection of antique glassware?

Question: What's the best way to liquidate a large collection of antique glassware?

(Posted by: Skeerguy on 2008-10-21 19:30:44)

My parents inherited a large collection of glassware from my grandmother. It was appraised 11 years ago with a value of $50, 000. Of course we would like to get as close to book value as possible but we also would like to have this completed sooner rather than later, within a year if possible. As I see it, our choices are ebay, sell to a dealer, set up a website or rent a space in an antique co- op. Which of these would be the best combination of value and speed? Are there other options we should consider?

I think you should consider a good quality flea market. Just because its called a flea market, and those words bring uo the thoughts of "cheap " in your head, its really not. I see many people selling nice antique glass for the price, and they would buy a few since some of them match, probably the whole set.

Well, as a dealer, I will tell you that glassware in general is low right now. Most likely, it will not bring anything close to your estimate. The internet has changed the face of selling prices, as has the economy. And glass is not "Hot " like it used to be. Of course there are a lot of variables to consider. Some pieces that are quite rare, will still command high prices. I'd suggest finding a dealer who specializes in glass. Also, search the internet for glass clubs, etc. and you might find some interest there. There are museums, groups, etc. devoted to just (for example) Heisey glass only. Ebay prices generally will net you a lower selling price, and shipping glass is tedious and it weighs in heavy (thus cutting in to your sale price) Good luck! PS I would not recommend setting up a storefront just for that. It's a specialized item and your average "joe " off the street will not be interested. Plus you run the risk of theft, breakage, chipping, etc. Condition is EVERYTHING when it comes to glass.
