I recently received an antique gift and was just curious to find out how much it would be worth today?

Question: I recently received an antique gift and was just curious to find out how much it would be worth today?

It is a pin with a sterling silver hand crafted bow and hanging from the bow is a gold locket with the front covered in mother of pearl. It is really gorgeous and in good shape. When I received it there were two photos in it, that of a woman and that of a man in a WWII uniform so it is very old. Just curious if it had any value, it was such a great gift and I will always treasure it.

Either a reputable jeweler (small local store rather than chain store) or an antique dealer who carries jewelry can give you a good appraisal. And if it has a decent monetary value, you might also consider having it insured under your homeowners/ rental policy (or your parents', if you are living at their home).

Since you have a photo to back up the age factor, consider yourself lucky. Some less than honorable dealers are passing off cheap copies of antique jewelry. Take it to a real jeweler to have it valued. Chain jewelry stores, like Zales, aren't qualified to do it justice.

It sounds very pretty. I would leave the pictures in it. It could be worth over one hundred dollars. Just make sure the clasp is secure, they can get bad over the years.

Take it to the Antiques roadshow
